Being back in Manila, for me, usually means catching up on the latest action on UFC and, recently, UFC took the fight to Macau, with Cung Le going head-to-head with Rich Franklin in the main event. The fighter I took notice of, however, was Mac Danzig.
Not only did he give Takanori Gomi a good fight, he's also probably the only mixed martial artist who's vegan. I immediately googled him.
Turns out he eats a lot of grains and tofu. That's where he gets his protein. Which are out for me - when I am pretending to follow a Paleo lifestyle.
The results of my blood tests are in and, strangely, I'm healthier now (uric acid levels are normal) - with all the beer I've been drinking and shit I've been eating - than I was when I was doing raw. And I've been having Snickers bars every single day that I've been here in Manila. I had two of them while I was typing this paragraph. (I'm on a Paleo break!)
I can't tell you how glad I am to know that I'm not meant to be a raw foodist. That would have killed me. I think our bodies instinctively know what's good for it and will seek these things out. Just as Mac Danzig didn't feel right about eating meat, my body knows that it needs meat. Although it seems to respond quite well to the raw-veggie-cooked-meat combo that I do in Siargao. Complemented by a steady stream of alcohol. And Snickers bars. And...
I've decided to head back to Siargao after spending the weekend in Cebu. Sneaking away before light tomorrow morning. Before any other mishaps occur on C-bloody-5.
"Run away!"
