So far, I've been good on the no sugar front. Only had one mango the other day. Sometimes, I think about chocolate chip cookies, but it's a good thing I can't be arsed to bake now. Especially since I haven't found the right recipe for crunchy chocolate chip cookies.
I did an inventory of what we have in the pantry that contains sugar. Thankfully, they're mostly stuff that we don't really use and can do without.
The stuff that I'm bummed that has sugar are the following:
- Thai fish sauce. And all the Thai seasonings (for tom yum going and curries). Thank god for Rufina patis!
- Japanese mayo. We usually make our own, but I bought all these Kewpie stuff recently because, well, I thought it would be good to have some in stock for quick fixes, like sandwiches at midnight. Now I have to give them away.
- Balsamic vinegar. I do love a balsamic reduction.
- Sinigang mix. I can never have sinigang again unless I know that it's made entirely from scratch.
- Tomato sauce. Ditto for anything with tomato sauce at a restaurant. Goodbye, pizza. <sob>
Some girls on the island make yoghurt with full-fat milk and no sugar so I've been taking that whenever I get a sugar craving. The lactose helps.
The Evil Twin is out and about more frequently now though, given that I've been drinking gin on the rocks, wine, and/or shots of anything. Last night, we went through a bottle of shochu in less than ten minutes. (According to my mate, "We drank it like water in the f-----g desert.") After I had already been drinking wine. What the hell was I thinking??? Not the best combination with this no-sugar thing. Instant mood swing, anyone? Bring out the sentimental waterworks! The Evil Twin took over soon after and, before I knew it, I was home and it was 4 AM.
Today, I have a metallic taste in my mouth. I thought it might have something to do with last night's excesses. But I checked online and it seems that my body may be going into ketosis, which is when it starts to burn fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. I have some Ketostix, reagent strips for urinalysis, and just tried one. It seems I have "small" amounts of ketones in my urine. Yay!
Although I'm not sure why. I have been having carbohydrates. I had white rice last night. This morning, I had a potato-onion omelette and, now, I'm just about to have a grilled cheese sandwich.
I'm not complaining though. I'm happy to be in ketosis despite what I am eating.
I wonder if hotdogs have sugar...
